Most people think a gym membership costs them R800 to R1,200 a month.

It doesn’t.

That’s just the entry fee.

The real cost starts long before you scan your tag at reception.

Let’s break it down.

The average person drives around 5km to gym and 5km home.
That’s 10km a session.
Do that 5 times a week and suddenly you’re driving over 200km a month… just to exercise.

Now add petrol.

At current fuel prices, you’re already sitting around R400–R500 per month just getting there.

But that’s not the real killer.

The real cost is the stuff nobody talks about:

  • Tyres
  • Services
  • Wear and tear
  • Depreciation
  • Parking
  • Traffic
  • Time

Because your car doesn’t magically recover those kilometres out of goodwill.

Add another R600–R800 per month conservatively in vehicle costs alone.

Then comes the “quick coffee.”

Or the smoothie.
Or the protein snack.
Or the “I’ll just grab something quickly” after training.

Another R1,000–R1,500 gone before you’ve even realised it.

Then finally…
the actual gym membership itself.

Now all of a sudden your “R1,000 gym membership” is actually costing you somewhere between:

R3,000–R4,000 per month.

That’s over:

R40,000 a year.

To train.

And listen — this isn’t anti-gym.

Gyms are great.
They serve a purpose.
For many people, they work incredibly well.

But what most people are actually chasing isn’t access to equipment.

They’re chasing:

  • consistency
  • accountability
  • structure
  • energy
  • community
  • results

And in today’s world, convenience matters more than ever.

Because the truth is most people don’t fail because exercise is too hard.

They fail because the process around exercise becomes too hard to sustain.

Too much driving.
Too much friction.
Too much time.
Too many moving parts.

That’s why the future of wellness isn’t just facilities.

It’s flexibility.

It’s bringing coaching, structure, accountability and community into people’s actual lives instead of forcing people to build their entire lives around training.

Because the best program in the world means nothing if people can’t sustain it consistently.

And consistency…
is still the thing that changes everything.
