This might sound harsh. It might even make you uncomfortable. But one thing life has taught me is this:
No one loves a victim.
People will feel sorry for you for a little while. They’ll listen to your story. They’ll comfort you. They’ll tell you that what happened wasn’t fair. But eventually? Life moves on. The world keeps turning. And the people who keep telling the same story over and over eventually find themselves standing in exactly the same place.
Because sympathy has an expiry date. Responsibility doesn’t. We have all been dealt difficult hands. Some are worse than others. Some have experienced trauma, loss, illness, betrayal, financial hardship, divorce, addiction, failure or heartbreak. None of those things should ever be minimised.
But they also don’t have to become your identity. There comes a point where you have to decide. Are you going to spend the next ten years explaining why your life is the way it is? Or are you going to spend the next ten years changing it?
The strongest people I’ve ever met aren’t the ones who had easy lives. They’re the ones who stopped asking, “Why me?” And started asking, “What now?”
That single shift changes everything. The gym teaches this lesson every day. Nobody can lift the weight for you. Nobody can do your push-ups. Nobody can build your strength. People can coach you. Encourage you. Support you. But eventually you have to pick the weight up yourself. Life works exactly the same way.
Your past explains you. It should never define you. Stop waiting for someone to rescue you. Stop waiting for perfect circumstances. Stop waiting until you feel motivated. Start where you are. Use what you have. Take one step. Then another.
Because confidence isn’t something you find. It’s something you build through action. You don’t become stronger by talking about your struggles. You become stronger by working through them. The truth is that people don’t admire victims. They admire people who refused to stay one.
The comeback is always more powerful than the setback. So if you’re reading this today and life has knocked you down… Good. Stand up. Dust yourself off. Own what’s yours to own. Leave the excuses where they belong. And go build a life that no longer needs explaining.
Because the world doesn’t remember the people who stayed down.
It remembers the people who got back up.
Huge love and High 5’s
Johno
